Project Overview

Project Name: Mandela Millers Flour Processing Plant

Location: Busega, Kampala, Uganda

Total Area: 11,650 SQM

Dimensions: 52m (L) × 23m (W) × 32m (H) (7 Stories)

Project Background: As a landmark within Kampala’s industrial zone, this project features a unique 7-story vertical design. Utilizing a 32-meter ultra-high steel structure, it supports the entire 300-ton daily production chain. It stands as a benchmark case for large-scale multi-story steel structure industrial buildings in East Africa.

Technical Highlights & Solutions

· Robust Structural System (High-Rise Steel Frame)

Design: We opted for a multi-story rigid frame paired with a cross-bracing lateral force resistance system, and the main structure uses heavy-duty H-beam columns and variable cross-section steel beams—this setup is both sturdy and practical.

Stability: Every floor has X-type horizontal bracing, which does a great job resisting wind loads at 32 meters and handling vibration from heavy milling equipment. This ensures long-term structural stability, even in Uganda’s local environment.

·Rapid Construction (Prefabricated Assembly)

Efficiency: We used full modular prefabrication for this project, which simplified on-site work a lot—only high-strength bolt connections and a little welding were needed.

Installation: We deployed large crawler cranes for synchronized lifting, making assembly quick and smooth. Compared to concrete buildings, this cut the construction cycle down noticeably.

·Advanced Anti-Corrosion (Epoxy Zinc-Rich Painting)

Protection: Instead of regular coating, we went with a high-performance Epoxy Zinc-Rich Anti-Corrosion Painting System—it’s far more durable for this type of facility.

Adaptability: This system is specially designed to resist high temperature, high humidity, and flour dust corrosion—all common headaches in food processing environments.

· Premium Wall Cladding (PU & Rock Wool)

Material: PU Edge-Sealed Rock Wool Sandwich Panels.

Performance: These panels offer three key benefits that work perfectly for a flour mill: Class A fire resistance, excellent thermal insulation, and strong sealing. They effectively block outdoor heat and dust, keeping the constant temperature and hygienic environment critical for flour production.

· Functional Design (Light, Air & Logistics)

Ventilation: We evenly placed glazed windows on the building facade to maximize natural light and air flow. This not only reduces energy use for mechanical ventilation but also lowers the risk of dust buildup— a key consideration for food processing.

Logistics: The ground floor is fitted with large industrial rolling shutter doors, making it fast and easy to load grain and finished products onto trucks—great for streamlining daily operations.

Vertical Flow: We integrated the vertical conveying system with the steel skeleton, letting raw grain flow efficiently from the ground up to the top-level processing lines. This smart design boosts production efficiency by over 30%.
