How To Add Onto A Steel Building

Blogs 1800

To add onto a steel building, there are mainly two kinds of structural schemes on the desktop: either do “end wall extension”, that is, lengthen the house along the length direction; Or do the “Lean-to Addition”, using the original column to widen outward.

Many owners tend to choose to build additional houses for the simple reason that they are cost-effective and have minimal interference with existing production. However, if what you need is a large space with a completely transparent interior and no line of sight, then the house will not solve the problem and the upper wall must be extended. However, this scheme usually requires the original end frame to be reinforced to cope with the new structural load.

But no matter which option you choose, the new foundation must be poured independently. This is to deal with uneven settlement and prevent structural cracking.

When planning the expansion, it is a prerequisite to ensure the safety and durability of the project to understand the specific mechanical principles of these two schemes and the rigid requirements for the foundation. Let me talk about the details of these two schemes and why foundation treatment is so critical.

Scheme 1: The Lean-To Addition-horizontal Widening

For owners who value cost control and don’t want construction to interfere with day-to-day operations, drapes are usually the first choice. The core of this way is to “broaden” the building, not “lengthen”.

Using The Existing Column

Why is it the most economical? Because it “eats” the old capital-directly using the original side column of the building. The roof beams of the new draped house are directly lapped on the corbel or column of the original structure. Since it is hung on a frame that has already been set up, you naturally save the high material cost of building a new independent side wall.

Single Slope Design

This kind of addition usually forms a single slope roof, “relying” on the original building. The slope is usually facing away from the main building to ensure smooth drainage.

Extremely Low Interference

Because it is added on the side of the building, it basically does not need to remove the original wall panels and will not disturb the internal operation process of the main factory building. If you just want to add a sheltered storage area, administrative office, or several more equipment rooms, and you don’t need to pursue a huge column-free net height, then this is the ideal plan.

Scheme 2: Headwall Extension -Longitudinal Elongation

If your workflow requires a continuous, open large flat floor (such as an assembly line extension), then the house is definitely not enough. In this case, the end wall extension is the only way out. Simply put, the building is stretched linearly by adding new bays.

Seamless Space

The goal of this scheme is to make the extension part and the interior of the old building merge into one, looking like a continuous large room. But that’s a bit of surgery: you have to remove the original end wall panels and sub-frames.

Steel Structure Workshop

Steel Structure Workshops offer versatile designs. Clear Span ensures unobstructed space, while Centre and Intermediate Columns provide economical solutions for wide spans.

Bridge/Steel Structure Bridgeipsum

Steel Structure Bridges utilize high strength-to-weight ratios to achieve long spans where intermediate supports are difficult.Their versatility makes them essential for critical infrastructure connectivity.

Steel Structure Buildings

Steel Structure Buildings feature versatile designs to meet diverse needs. Clear Span offers open space, while Centre and Intermediate Columns increase economy for large spans. Multi Gable accommodates complex widths.

Structural Load Reinforcement (Top Priority)

This is the most technical test of the entire expansion. You should know that the original end wall rigid frame usually only bears half the load of the standard opening (because it is on the most side) when it is originally designed. But when you extend the building, the original “border” instantly becomes the “main rigid frame” in the middle, which must bear the full load. Therefore, if the original end frame is directly expanded without first strengthening, the risk of structural failure is extremely high.

Add A New Bay

Once the original end frame is reinforced and the wall is removed, the new large-span rigid frame can be connected by bolts to maintain the original geometric shape and extend to the length you want.

Key Step: Foundation And Uneven Settlement

Whether you choose a cheap draped house or a complex end wall extension, the foundation strategy will always be a part of the “life and death” in construction.

Considerations for adding extensions to steel structures

Independent Pouring

Don’t try to save trouble, pour the new foundation directly on the edge of the old foundation, don’t expect to rigidly connect them together. New concrete must be cast independently.

Understanding Uneven Settlement

The concept of “Uneven Settlement” is involved here. The old house has been standing there for many years, and the underground soil has long been compacted and sunk in place. However, the newly built part is heavier and the following is new concrete. Its settlement rate is definitely different from that of the old house.

To Prevent Cracking

If you put the old and new foundation tied together, this uneven settlement will produce a huge stress point, directly to the concrete floor crack, and even lead to the upper steel structure distortion. Honestly make a separation joint (usually called expansion joint or isolation joint), so that the newly added part can “free” settlement, which is the right way to preserve the integrity of the whole steel structure building.
