How To Build A Steel Roof
As long as the installation is in place, the metal roof is almost invincible. Most of the problems are not the material itself, but the waterproof board is not handled properly, or the tightening torque of the screws is wrong.

Before Construction
Before the first of steel plates hit the roof, the preparations decided everything. You have to remember that metal roofing is a complete system, not just a covering. Although the metal plate can be directly covered on the old tile, but my personal career advice is always “completely removed”. Only in this way can you check the bottom of the wood base (decking) there is no rot, and ensure that the base surface is absolutely flat.
- Waterproof cushion (Underlayment): Stop using traditional linoleum and replace it with a high-quality synthetic cushion. It is more resistant to handling and can provide a secondary waterproof barrier as long as the life of a metal plate.
- Safety equipment: Dry metal roofing means you have to face sharp edges and extremely slippery surfaces. Safety ropes, soft-soled shoes with strong grip and cut-resistant gloves are life-saving things that cannot be sloppy at all.
Necessary Tools For Professional Construction
If you want to ensure the stability of the structure, you have to prepare some real guys.
- Electric scissors or edgers: Never use a high-speed circular saw with a regular saw blade, which can burn the coating and cause premature rusting of the edges.
- Adjustable Torque Screw Gun: This thing is very important, you have to rely on it to accurately control the tightness of the screw.
- Magnetic sleeve: it can be stable and not deviated when the hexagon head tapping screw is hit.
Steel Structure Workshop
Steel Structure Workshops offer versatile designs. Clear Span ensures unobstructed space, while Centre and Intermediate Columns provide economical solutions for wide spans.
Bridge/Steel Structure Bridgeipsum
Steel Structure Bridges utilize high strength-to-weight ratios to achieve long spans where intermediate supports are difficult.Their versatility makes them essential for critical infrastructure connectivity.
Steel Structure Buildings
Steel Structure Buildings feature versatile designs to meet diverse needs. Clear Span offers open space, while Centre and Intermediate Columns increase economy for large spans. Multi Gable accommodates complex widths.
Step By Step Installation Process
Step 1: Install Drip Eaves and Cornice Trim
Start from the lowest part of the roof. The dripping eaves are to be mounted on the cushion. This ensures that any wind-blown water under the board flows directly into the gutter, rather than soaking your fascia (fascia) or the inside of the cornice.
Step 2: Calibrate the first of plates
This is where the vast majority of newbies may get wrong. The board must be perfectly perpendicular to the cornice. If the bottom is even 1/8 inch off, by the time you reach the other side of the roof, the error may have widened to several inches. It is necessary to ensure a 90-degree right angle.
Step 3: Master screw tightness
The wrong screw is the number one cause of water leakage.
- Objective: The EPDM rubber washer should be pressed just flush with the metal head of the screw.
- Too loose: the gasket is not pressed, and water will seep into the thread.
- Tighten too tightly: The gasket will be squeezed and deformed or even cracked, and the metal plate will be locked too dead to expand and shrink with the temperature. Over time, the bolt hole will be elongated, and water leakage will be a matter of time.

Step 4: Lap and side seam
The lap direction must avoid the prevailing local wind direction to prevent “wind and rain” from squeezing water hard into the ribs. If it is a roof with a lower slope, I strongly recommend adding a high-quality butyl tape to the side seam for double insurance.
Step 5: Waterproof board
90% of the water leakage occurs on the waterproof board.
- Drainage ditch: Use “W” type drainage ditch waterproof board, which can guide water flow more effectively and prevent debris accumulation.
- Chimneys and vents: Custom bent metal flashing and high-grade silicone sealant must be used. Don’t expect to rely on only that layer of glass glue, waterproof board must be in the physical structure and roofing system bite together.
Step 6: Install Ridge Cap
Wait for all the plates to be fixed, and finally install the roof cover plate. Preventing condensation from accumulating under the metal plate, otherwise the “invisible” grassroots rot will sooner or later give you a headache.
Final Inspection
After the last screw is unscrewed, don’t rush down the ladder.
- Clean the roof: Use a soft broom to sweep away all the metal shavings. If you don’t clean it up, the debris will rust and stain your brand new roof in a few days.
- Check the washers: walk circles around the roof and check each fastener. See the deformation of the gasket, directly exit to replace a new one.
- Check the sealant: Make sure all transition points are coated with UV resistant roofing sealant.
Summary
Building a metal roof is an extremely high-return project, but it is extremely precision-testing. As long as you keep an eye on the details-especially the waterproof board and screw tightness-you get not a temporary patch, but a once-and-for-all solution. Follow these professional steps and your metal roof will likely outlive the house itself.
